Lizzie and Tom left the others outside the supermarket and turned into their lane to walk home. Once they were out of earshot, Tom hurled a torrent of questions at his sister, but she felt too overwhelmed to get into a discussion. He couldn’t understand why she didn’t want to go for pizza with the others, or why she didn’t sound so excited any more about the Varkarola in two days’ time.

Lizzie used the headache excuse to get him to stop, but Tom wouldn’t buy it and insisted. He was still demanding answers when they reached their front door. But, when they got there, what they saw made them both freeze, their dispute instantly forgotten.

Another raven awaited them on the landing. Lizzie’s heart did a backflip just as Tom let out a squeal of excitement. Both of them stood, transfixed, watching the bird as it hopped, then waddled for a short distance towards them. Much to their excitement, it had another pebble in its beak. With a short, quiet caw as if in friendly greeting, it let it drop, the rattling sound of the impact on the tiled floor reverberating against their apartment’s front wall.

Without waiting for a reaction from them, the raven flapped its wings and flew high up, then disappeared over the roof, no doubt heading straight back to the mountain of Martaouna and to Phoni.

Tom bent over and picked up the pebble.

‘Our second one!’ he said triumphantly, hopping up and down.

Lizzie bent over to peer at it as he held it in the palm of his hand. It was black and perfectly round and smooth, like the previous one, identical. ‘Which one is that for, do you think?’

‘For Popi, no doubt. Can’t be for Mandy, can it? It’s too soon.’

‘It might be for Mr Petros. You did say he no longer felt the pain.’

‘Yes. For now. But muscle and nerves are much more difficult to heal than skin. One application isn’t enough. But if he applies some more cream tonight, and with using some more tomorrow morning, we may get a pebble for Mr Petros too. So even if we don’t succeed with Mandy, we could still be home and dry.’

‘Better not take any chances. We should do our best with both of them.’

‘Of course, Lizzie. Which reminds me... This afternoon, you and I need to find a suitable bracelet for Mandy. You know, her mermaid gift?’

‘Of course.’

Lizzie got the keys out of her beach bag and made a move to put the key in the lock when Tom leaned towards her and put his hand on her arm. ‘Lizzie? What is it? I know there’s something troubling you.’

‘Oh Tom, don’t worry your little head about it.’ She opened the door and walked in.

‘You forget that I’m not little, Lizzie. I am as old as you are. Never forget that,’ said Tom as he followed her inside.
